FreskSpoke is putting the bite on the North American food industry with our new social-mobile application for the growing market of buyers turning away from imported and processed foods in favour of those produced closer to home.

Launching across Canada in Spring 2015 and now a crowdfunding Staff Pick on Kickstarter, FreskSpoke brings the people and places in the local food ecosystem together on one fun and engaging application. The group is determined to make it easy for consumers and wholesale buyers to find and verify local food from farmers, markets, restaurants, micro-producers and retailers, making FreskSpoke a valuable marketing platform for these businesses to reach that growing crowd of buyers hungry for local food.

Local food is a growing trend but knowing what’s available, where to find and what to do with it once it’s in our fridge challenges our interest and ability to eat local. The vast majority of us want to improve our health with a diet rich in fresh, local foods while supporting local farmers and environmental sustainability. However, available information and distribution systems don’t make it easy and that has put up some barriers.

After months of research, we are quite sure that our laser focus on food kilometres has resulted in a lot of confusion amongst the general public about what “local” truly means and has created an information system that is too regionalized and fragmented to encourage widespread local food adoption. This has been a source of frustration amongst food producers in particular who, until FreskSpoke, had to manage multiple marketing profiles in order to reach their customers. This takes valuable time away from the business of growing and producing food.

We’re a highly mobile society and that makes local food a moving target. Our commitment to fresh, local food is part of who we are and a wonderful way to connect with the culture and people in the communities we visit. But people don’t want to jump from one source to another, they want an app like FreskSpoke – one quick and reliable source to not only find & verify local food but to connect and share their local food experiences with likeminded people.

FreskSpoke will debut its Web app this May and hopes to raise $30,000 in donations during March through crowdfunding on Kickstarter. FreskSpoke is appealing for pledges from local food enthusiasts and food businesses so we can release and market our mobile application as early as this summer. In return, FreskSpoke rewards our supporters with everything from in-app status and “Eat Local” T-shirts to in-app credits and gourmet dinners.
